Jeanne M. Patrick, 84, of Lakewood, N.J., died Thursday, March 26, at home, after a long illness. She was a retired nurse. Born in Ashland, Pa., she grew up in nearby Centralia and graduated from Mount Carmel (Pa.) Catholic High School and the Fitzgerald Mercy School of Nursing in Darby, Pa. She married a Mount Carmel native, John F. Patrick Jr., in 1952, and they immediately made their home in Lakewood, where she began her career as a registered nurse at Paul Kimball Hospital. She became the nurse at Brookwood Elementary School (now the Sylvia Rosenauer School) in Jackson upon its opening in 1963 and finished her professional career there in 1990. She also worked as a private duty nurse and as a summer nurse at Toms River Chemical/Ciba-Geigy. While a nurse, she earned credits at Ocean County College and Georgian Court College toward a Bachelor of Arts degree she received from Trenton State College in 1970. She and her husband, who predeceased her in 2004, were devout parishioners of St. Mary of the Lake Roman Catholic Church in Lakewood, where they were Eucharistic ministers, Pre-Cana instructors and dedicated fund-raisers. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and volunteered her nursing skills in service of the church community. She was a former member of the Lakewood Cabana Club, the Lakewood Bath and Tennis Club and the Lakewood Tennis Center and was an avid tennis player until her 70s. She continued to enjoy watching televised tennis until her death. As a recreational runner, she participated in Jersey Shore-area races, particularly 5-mile runs around Lake Carasaljo in Lakewood. More than anything, she was devoted to her immediate and extended families. In addition to her husband, who retired as the superintendent of Lakewood's schools in 1991, she was predeceased by her parents, James F. McCullion and Ann Connolly McCullion; two brothers, James T. and Robert T. McCullion; son-in-law, William D. Mackolin and her niece and god-daughter Kathleen A. McCullion. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Karen Patrick-Mackolin and Robert S. Jedrusiak, of Manchester, N.J.; two sons, John F. "JP" Patrick III and his wife, Ronda S. Saylor, of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., and Walter J. Patrick and his wife, Lynda Ackerman, of Metuchen, N.J.; a sister, Anne F. Curley, of Red Bank, N.J.; a brother, Joseph T. McCullion and his wife, Darlene, of Doylestown, Pa.; six grandchildren, Bill, Garrett, Bridget, Jadyn Ainiu, Eden Jac and Cooper James; nine nephews and nine nieces; and countless patients she treated. She is also survived by two devoted caregivers who were at her side for more than eight years, Connie Elliott and Arlene Daniels. The Patrick family owes them tremendous gratitude for their selfless compassion, and also extends special thanks to Jeanne's loving sister-in-law Eileen McCullion of Toms River and a longtime friend, Bunny Zuber of Freehold, who opened their homes to provide comfort to her after extended hospitalizations. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at D'Elia Funeral Home, 1300 Vermont Avenue, Lakewood, N.J. 08701. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary of the Lake, Lakewood. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the charity of your choice and following Jeanne's example of treating everyone with love and respect.
